IT Support for Small Business Savannah
We use our computers for nearly everything these days from buying tickets and working to playing games and creating music. With so many uses and programs, the controls and inputs these machines receive are exponentially growing. Even with all of this differentiation and divergence in our uses -there are still quite a few little shortcuts on the computer that we can all benefit from.
Landon Technologies has been providing quality Savannah IT support for years now and there are some issues we come across time and again.
Rather than try and explain each trick or tip we regularly give out on an individual basis, this is an attempt to give out some of our more common ones in one place.

Perhaps one of the most annoying things is when you are multi-tasking and accidentally close a tab. Doing so will often cause you to lose your place, and sometimes you may not even remember what webpage you were on exactly. Well, worry not, if you accidentally close out a tab it is possible to reopen the last tab you closed just like you had it.
Simply use these keystrokes,
On a PC: Ctrl + Shift + T
On a Mac: Cmd + Shift + T
and your lost tab will open right back up.
Another tip that is a bit related, but is also usually known by most people, is the Ctrl + Z hotkey.
On a PC: Ctrl + Z
On a Mac: Cmd + Z
Using Ctrl + Z will undo most things on a PC and Ctrl + Y will bring it back. This is an awesome time-saver. Experiment and see which of your programs this will work in.
2. Password protect individual files
Often we have to share our machines with teams and family members and in the world of wireless syncing, Bluetooth and other connective methods simply having separate files may not keep all of your files safe.
There is a way to protect your files other than having a password on your computer’s main log-in. This will let you secure a few folders while keeping the rest of the machine secure.
First, you need to create an archive of the files you want to protect. You can do this using programs like these:
- The Unarchiver (Mac)
- WinRAR
Once that is done, you simply encrypt the archive (this is actually usually done in the creation of the article itself).
- Speed up startup
Our computers are powerful machines, but it seems manufacturers constantly load them down with just enough useless stuff to keep them always moving just a bit too slow. This is usually most evident at the startup where all of those background programs launch themselves and get going.
You may not even realize just how many programs you don’t use are running whenever you turn on your computer. Turning these off at startup will help your computer start faster and often help it run better as well.
- On Mac: Go to your system preferences, then Users & Groups. Go the Login Items tab and you can begin to edit from there.
- Windows 7 and later: Windows+R will bring up a window called RUN where you will put in ‘Msconfig’ which will open an area where you can edit your startup options.
- Older Windows: Hit Ctrl+Shift+Esc which will bring up a window. Go to the tab labeled startup and you can make changes from there.
4. Using Google
Google may perhaps be the most used site on every machine in the country. Yet still, many have not learned how to use the search bar past simply typing in a few keywords or a phrase. Google actually allows you to refine your searches in many ways -simply by how you type it.
We realized a good amount of the Savannah IT support needed could be prevented by a few accurate Google searches. Though hopefully, you don’t get so good at this that it puts us at Landon technologies out of the job!
Using Quotes
Search for: “Chocolate Rabbits”
instead of: Chocolate Rabbits
If you do not use quotes, Google will look for the keyword rabbits and the keyword chocolate and will present you the sites with either the most overlap or the most rabbits or the most chocolate -it doesn’t necessarily know this is a single object.
When you put quotes around two or more words you let Google know these need to stick together and you will be specifically searching for rabbits made from chocolate.

If you are searching for an object with a keyword that can have multiple meanings, you may need to refine your search a bit. Say you were trying to write a report on some famous expedition, but every time you google the word “expedition” the 2020 Ford Expedition SUV keeps taking over the search.
To search for a word while excluding results you add a hyphen or minus sign.
For example if I search: Expedition -Ford -SUV
I will get all the results of pages talking about expeditions without mention of SUVs or the Ford company. This is how you refine a keyword down to a specific meaning.

An asterisk is a ‘wild card’ word for the search engine. If you can remember parts of a phrase, song, or speech then you can fill in the parts you know, then put an asterisk at the parts you don’t. It puts a placeholder for Google to know a word should be there, but it is unknown.
A good example is trying to find song lyrics. If you know some of the words, fill in the blanks and google can do the rest.
For example: This little * of mine, I’m gonna * it shine
will bring up the full title of the song and any other phrase which may happen to match this sequence.
Another simple format: * stops bears best
This can be another way of asking what stops bears best. As it will bring up all variations of ____ stops bears best on the internet.
